Bree Devanagari takes its cue from one of the world’s friendliest typefaces, the joyful Bree, to create a fresh, friendly typographic expression in India’s most widely-used script. Its sunny disposition sets an exuberant tone for branding and headlines, and the text weights are a pleasure to read in longer settings. Bree achieves this by balancing the liveliness of handwriting with cohesive visual patterns and rhythms.

If the popularity of Bree Latin is anything to go by, Bree Devanagari will suit a multitude of uses. Its warmth and memorability make it a perfect choice for logos, packaging and signage for brands that speak from the heart and build communities. On the other hand, Bree Devanagari’s compact proportions across weights are ideal for headlines in mobile apps, newspapers and online magazines, where space is at a premium but personality is no less important.

Even though the multiscript Bree family offered an adaptable recipe for the Devanagari design, every script’s geometry and grammar poses unique design challenges. Devanagari letterforms had to be expertly manipulated so they would shine in the extrabold weight, where managing their shapes with slender widths and hefty strokes was an uphill task. We persevered, and the result is an impressive palette that can go from scant in the thin weight to bursting in the extrabold.

Bree Devanagari also features many closed shapes, such as the ikar and iikar matras, which are fashioned as a nod to the recognisable penmanship evoked in the Latin lowercase g, k, y and z: two scripts written by the same hand. Like any professional Devanagari typeface worth its salt, the design includes regional letter variants that cater to Hindi and Marathi readers. Five base consonants, ख ग र स ल, and over one hundred and fifty of their derivative forms, from half letters to conjuncts, also come in two alternates that can transform Bree Devanagari from spirited to restrained in both languages.

Over time, Bree Devanagari’s seven weights and extensive range of stylistic alternates provide a great deal of flexibility and room to grow. With Bree Devanagari, it is possible to be gregarious while being polished.
